Class Information
8th grade Mathis designed to support students with higher needs to gain access to the 8th grade Math curriculum. The course is built around the Big Ideas Math Text (https://www.bigideasmath.com/). The curriculum is based on the common core state standards (CCSS). These can be found for mathematics at their website http://www.corestandards.org/Math/ . The students will also be using other resources to support their learning, such as Moby Max (more information can be found on the resources page).
Class Materials:
- 1 inch 3-ringed Binder (for Data Notebooks- explained below)
- Pencils
- Pen
- 2-Pocket Folder
- 1 subject Notebook
Data Notebooks
Students' progress will be monitored using data notebooks. Each student will have a binder which contains the information we will be covering on a weekly basis (roughly, depending on the intensity of the standard). The students will independently monitor their own progress with the support of their teacher. Students will take a pre-assessment prior to each core standard, and post-assessment after covering that standard. Students will graph their progress and keep track of the standards covered within the course. This allows students to take ownership of their learning and allows the teacher to view progress and discover skill areas that may need more attention.

Assignments:
Assignments will be updated weekly. There will be information about each assignment and videos to support student and parent learning. If any links do not work, please let me know ASAP!Grading for assignments in daily class work will be graded according to a 3-point scale. All three points will be awarded to students who complete the assignment, get all or mostly correct answers, and appear to show an effort. Two points will be awarded for work that is mostly complete, 2-3 problems incorrect, and gave average effort. One point will be awarded to students who do not complete most of the work, get many incorrect problems, and did not give much effort. And, zero points will be awarded to students who do not complete the assignment, or gave very minimal effort.
Writing assignments will be graded according to a writing rubric. The rubric may differ for different assignments in the course. The students will be provided with information needed for the assignments according to the rubric, and a copy of the rubric with their score after it has been graded.
Please contact me with any questions about grading.
